Postgraduate medical training programmes in many European countries have already been changed according to new concepts, such as competency-based education and assessment for learning.
The idea that trainees are in charge of their own training, in combination with continuous assessment and updating of the training programme, has shown to especially improve and optimize many postgraduate medical training programmes.
A fellowship in gynaecological oncology is a great example of a workplace-based training programme where these same concepts can be used to augment training.
Finally, and possibly most important, trainees who are trained according to these modern concepts are capable of using these concepts throughout their career facilitating the phenomenon of ‘life long learning’.
This will lead to highly trained specialists for whom keeping their skills and knowledge up-to-date and up to the expected standard is a way of life.
The first part of the workshop will be aimed at Gestational trophoblastic disease.
The programme will be delivered with cooperation with the European Organization for the Treatment of Trophoblastic disease (EOTTD).
Attendees will become familiar with all aspects of the management of gestational trophoblastic disease, the management of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (low- and high-risk), the value and pitfalls of diagnostic tests such as hCG measurements, pathology, clinical guidelines, and follow-up.
The second part of the workshop focuses on effective learning. After the workshop, attendees will be able to formulate ‘SMART’ learning aims, construct and evaluate their learning, give effective feedback, and extract information from feedback.
The final part of the workshop focuses on effective learning (and teaching!) skills. After completing this part the attendees will become familiar with the most recent ideas and concepts about how skills should be taught and assessed and will be able to learn and teach new skills according to these concepts.
EOTTD will deliver five skilled speakers for the part on gestational trophoblastic disease.
Hosted by the European Network of Young Gynaecological Oncologists (ENYGO), Dr. Pim Teunissen and Dr. Cor de Kroon will lead an introductory workshop on workplace learning, especially developed for trainees in gynaecological oncology.
This workshop will require active participation. There will be ample opportunity for participants to share their challenges and successes in education and time will be reserved to discuss training differences between European countries.
Workshop attendance is limited to 25 participants.
